Typography Journal Entry #6

The typography is really small.... but I think in this case it words. It is pretty consistent. Each heading is the same font in the same style (bold). The lines serve to break up the information into chunks that make such small text a little easier to read. The underlying information is the same font and it is also in the same style. There is clear Hierarchy going on.

Something Spooky. Nice lettering. Makes it seem really old fashioned.

All caps works well for the band, Alternative. Slight distortion also gives it a grunge feel. Usually, however, using all caps doesn't work well for messages. One's eye can't flow as easily through all capitals, as the mind is not used to it. Hierarchy in dominance. The bold numbers help to break up the information. In this case, the names of the different tracks. Used here is right alignment, which is usually difficult and not as commonly used. It's a little... strange, and gives a general feeling of oddity. However, that also fits the band's genre. Alternative is usually focused on forms of music that are unique and viewed as different or experimental. Alternative is a genre category usually given to bands who music does not fit into the main genres such as rock, pop, metal, classical, etc.

It's obvious that this is Time Magazine. Their Logo is consistent throughout the majority of their work. Not problems there. There is a good use of Serif with Sans serif, although the narrower, smaller sans serif typeface is more difficult to read. This is especially true at the top. All of the typography is uppercase only. This appears to work, probably because there is a small amount of text. The typography is centered, and would probably work in this way, were the white not so awkward against the yellow. However, white works better than some of the other colors they could have used. For instance, if they had used black, it would have a receding effect. And, if they had used red, it would have blended. I think they did the best they could with what they had.
